 Friends of the African Union announces a series of events for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 15, 2018

This is the FAU’s 6th annual celebration of the holiday in Cincinnati, dedicated to keeping Dr. King’s legacy vibrant in our community.

The local theme for the 2018 events is “If Not Now When?”.

The FAU theme is: 50 Years Ago this year they killed a messenger not the message. Moving money to Main Street not just Wall Street, NOW.

The day is filled with opportunities for participation, commemoration, and celebration around the nation. Events Free and Open to the Public in Cincinnati.

9:00 a.m. Friends of the African Union theme conference call with all FAU Chapters and Bureaus from the World Peace Bell.

10:30 a.m. Commemorative Civil Rights March begins at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center

3:00 p.m. Worldwide conference call on the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and it’s tie in to MLK.

 

4:30 to 8:30 At the main public library in Cincinnati we create at 5 p.m. the greater Cincinnati UN Association Chapter dedicated to MLK – conference call with all FAU Chapters and Bureaus

Since 1946, the United Nations Association of the United States has been dedicated to building understanding of and support for the ideals and work of the UN among the American people. It is only with the continued commitment of passionate supporters that we can continue to educate, inspire and mobilize Americans to support the vital work of the United Nations!

The UN is an international organization, not a government. As a result, its effectiveness depends on the participation of 193 sovereign member states and the backing of citizens around the world. The United Nations Association of the United States, a program of the United Nations Foundation, works day in and day out to support the mission of the UN by connecting Americans to the work of the UN and advocating for strong US leadership within the UN.

Becoming a member of UNA-USA links us to a network of like-minded individuals who collectively promote the work of the UN at the grassroots level. Benefits of joining today include:

  • A forum to voice your support for U.S. engagement at the UN, with a current focus in making the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) a success.
  • A network of more than 180 UNA-USA chapters and divisions throughout the country comprised of people passionate about the mission of the United Nations.

  • Our chapter will be involved with the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA) strives for coordinated, effective and sustained UN and international support for Africa’s transformative efforts for inclusive sustainable peace, security, socioeconomic development and justice for all in the continent.
  • Our chapter will be involved with the Economic and Social Council is at the heart of the United Nations system to advance the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. It is the central platform for fostering debate and innovative thinking, forging consensus on ways forward, and coordinating efforts to achieve internationally agreed goals. It is also responsible for the follow-up to major UN conferences and summits.  The UN Charter established ECOSOC in 1945 as one of the six main organs of the United Nations.
  • Our chapter will be involved with Civil society as the “third sector” of society, along with government and business. It comprises civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations. The UN recognizes the importance of partnering with civil society, because it advances the Organization’s ideals, and helps support its work. Here are some useful websites for members of civil society and also for those interested in the work of the UN.  Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can participate in the work of the UN in one of two ways: either through consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), or association with the UN Department of Public Information (DPI).
